Dr. Clay Redfield, Associate Director of Bands

Dr. Clay Redfield is the Associate Director of Bands and is a
Lecturer in Music Education at Sacramento State. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Sac State, a Masters of Arts and Letters Degree from the American Band College of Southern Oregon University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition to directing the
Sacramento State Marching Band, Concert Band, and Hornet Revue Pep Band, he teaches courses within the music education program and is an active clinician and adjudicator.

Tyler Mathiesen, Percussion Instructor

Tyler Mathiesen of Sacramento, California has been affiliated with the Sacramento State Marching Band since fall of 2003. He is currently the drumline instructor at CSUS and Fairfield High School. Tyler graduated from Sacramento High School in 2001, where he played snare drum. He continued his drumming career from 2000-2002 while marching for Mandarins Drum Corps and Crossmen Drum Corps in 2003. Tyler has been affiliated with McClatchy High, Center High, Elk Grove High, Sacramento High and Vallejo High.

Ryan Bruner, Percussion Instructor (TBD)

Ryan was a member of the Mandarins percussion section for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In 2004 Ryan aged out as a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drumline, also winning a gold medal in the I&E Bass Drum Ensemble competition. Ryan is currently working on a B.S. in Graphic Design and a minor in Music from California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). He is also an instructor for the CSUS Marching Band, Fairfield High School, and has been Co-Caption Head/Arranger at Bella Vista High School (Fair Oaks, Ca) since 2002. Ryan also teaches several private percussion students rudimental drumming, and drum set.

Rena Quicho, Guard Instructor

Rena Quicho of Vallejo, California, graduated class of 2004 from CSU, Hayward with a B.A. degree in Psychology. Rena is currently the colorguard instructor at CSUS and has been since fall of 2004. Since childhood, she has developed a strong passion for dance and the arts. Just last year, she was a member of the IN MOTION Independent Winterguard out of Fairfield, California and earned a silver medal in Dayton, Ohio for W.G.I. championships. From 2001-2005, Rena continued her colorguard teaching career primarily choreographing and directing for Vallejo High school, while working with Solano Middle School and Granite Bay High School for several stints throughout those years. She currently works with the special education department of the Sacramento City Unified School District and is the director and choreographer for the Elk Grove High School Cologuard. Rena is continuing her education in pursuit of her M.S. degree in Counselor Education here at CSUS.

Will Schilling, Assistant, Announcer, and Alumni Band President

Will Schilling has been the announcer for the Sacramento State Marching Band since the 2001 season. A 2002 graduate of Sacramento State with a BA in Government and a minor in Music Education, he was a member of the band from 1997-2000, playing both the clarinet and sousaphone. In 1999, he was co-section leader of the clarinet section and was a member of the Band Council in 1999. He also served as the band's equipment manager from 1998-2000. Will is also leading the revival as president of the Sacramento State Hornet Alumni Band and has helped spearhead the Alumni Band's performances over Christmas Break in 2006. He currently is a Transportation Planner for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
